Okay I am not sure how the legal process works and i am looking for some advice. My mother was injured at work. She is a registed nurse, and after an MRI was conducted by the hospitals personal doctor, it was concluded that she is permanently disabled, and can no longer be a registed nurse. Nevertheless, my mother tried to work through the pain, but after a couple of weeks of literally back breaking pain she decided that she can no longer work... Today, the hospital sent a letter claiming that they will give her 10,659 over a 5 month period. In addition, they offered to give her 4,000 to pursue another career. Also, they said that they will TRY to offer her a less labor intensive position in the hospital, if supplies allow.
My mother went to a lawyer today and he was very critical of the situation and suggested that my mother immediately take legal actions to get a better settlement. in addition,he also added that he would get 15 percent of the settlement, which makes me wonder if he would be the best person to take advice from.
I am not sure if the hospitals proposal of a less labor intensive job will last the arbitrariness of time. especially considering the recent downfall of the economy, i doubt that they will pay my mother her 60,000 salary to do something that doesn't require much work.
What should my mother do?

It sounds like a strange settlement. Usually, there is a formula to determine her relative disability and apply it to her future earning potential or a stipulated amount. They also usually pay in a lump sum. Hospitals have a lot of positions that can use an rn, they could probably easily make room for her. I would probably hire an attorney, but I don't know the details.
