I was wondering what the average cost of childbirth in new jersey is with and with out maternity insurance. How much the maternity insurance cost and how good was it? No solicitors please, only real life experience, thanks!
Thanks so much, I had my first daughter in Florida and our insurance wasn't very good so now that we live here I was just wondering how it would stack up. I had a reasonably quick delivary six hours total from first contaction to holding her with not even so much as an iv. Oh and congrats Ashley! Hope yours go as smooth!

OB fees are generally flat fees - for a Vaginal delivery you're looking are around $ 3000-3500.00 ( this doesn't include lab fees/ultrasounds)

For a C-Section you're looking at around $ 4000.00 on up

For the hospital - you're looking at around $ 5000.00 for a vaginal delivery without complications

With complication around another $ 2000.00

For a C-Section you're looking at around $ 15,000.00 on up without complications

I live in VA and have insurance, but I also wound up in the hospital for 10 days prior to delivery. My water broke early. Not counting my room and the numerous doctors who checked on me each day, my bill for just the delivery and nursery care was about 12,000 before insurance. I wound up paying about 1,000 out of pocket towards my deductible. For my hospital, here is the breakdown:

EDIT: Just thought I would add that my 10 days on bed rest in the hospital ended up being about 36,000. My insurance paid all but about $ 950. I have BCBS and had already reached my deductible for the year because I gave birth in December. :)

Vaginal: 2,400
Epidural: 1,800
Newborn nursery care: 5,000
My recovery for 2 days: 2,000
Circumcision: 400

These were just the big ticket items. I also got little bills here and there for blood work (me and baby), doctor fees, and they actually charge you a "discharge fee" which is where they get all your paperwork together and discharge you and the baby.

You definitely want insurance of any kind before having a baby. It's extremely expensive.
