I am working for a small company. My boss has just made somebody redundant as he hasn't enough work for her. I am still very busy though in fact he has given me some of her work. I have just noticied that most of the fees generated for the whole office are generated by me i.e. most of the invoices for the month are for my cases (i work in an attorney/solicitor office) but we all get paid similarily. Do you think it is a bad time to ask for a raise when they have just announced a redundancy? I can definitely show that I have earned as I have done a lot of fee paying work so should be rewarded.

It never hurts to ask. But don't demand one unless you are willing to leave.

You raise an interesting issue. It seems that you're generating a lot of the business income. Have you considered starting your own business?
Answering your question, if your boss has hired someone that has no real purpose and you're doing more than your share of work, there is a problem with management. A raise is in order but I have a feeling that he's probably going to bring up the added expense of hiring this other person. That's always the easy way out.
