My daughter purchased a second hand car which came with a 3 month warranty. It had a light which came on on the dashboard. It went back to garage who did some work on it and returned it, but still a red light. After several trips to the garage, they eventually agreed they would fix the problem for once and for all and put a new engine in it at no cost to my daughter. Sadly this has not fixed the problem and they keep returning to garage and as not covered by the warranty have to pay each visit with no luck to the red light going. She's now ben told it will cost at least £700 to fix it!

My parten thinks they have not changed the engine. I know she can find out the new engine number, but where might she find the old number.

Any ideas about what she could do will be very much appreciated.

When her husband asked the garage how much thry would give her to take the car back, they told her she needs to seek advice from a solicitor! That doesn't make any sense!

Please can anyone out there help?

Thanks so much

If the engine that was in the car when she bought it was the original engine fitted when the car was built,

Then that is the engine number that will be quoted on the registration documentation!
The number will be physically stamped on the engine block somewhere( a call to the main dealer will establish where for your model).

If the numbers are identical then there is no doubt that the engine has not been changed!

If they say that they rebuilt the engine, unless the car is a rare model that really never happens due to the time constraints involved!

just mention the trading standards office(UK, not sure where you are situated) and they generally have a change of heart!

Best of luck
