just today I nearly died. choked on a big piece of steak, deep in my throat. I was alone and there wasn't anyone to help me so after about 40 seconds I didn't have many other options so I actually pulled it out of my own throat with my fork (yes my throat hurts, no I'm not bleeding.... yes go see a doc. I know)

but anyhow, it left me thinking, this would be WAY to early to die and for that matter, anytime is too early.

so, I considered to actually pursue my wonder of being sent to alcor
http://www.alcor.org/
in the untimely event of my death and go ahead and play roulette with the idea of wasting money or winning and living again afterwards.

so my question is..... has anyone here seriously considered alcor and if you have, whats a cheap option to go with and whats a "living member" and their fees?

term, whole or adjustable life insurance?

too much legal talk for me here.

yeah, slow down. I think I got that one down now.
a bum with no "current" education............ interesting

don't you think they might want to parade me around like a circus freak, and feeding me (maybe not steak though)
the life insurance is a method of direct payment alcor ONLY in the event of my death (about 70,000 I think with 180,000 left over to go to my kids)

plus I make a hefty Interest on the policy too.
yeah. it was weird sliding the fork down calmly and smoothly as I couldn't breath and was panicking..

I really didn't care what kind of damage I caused though.

perhaps sword swallowing isn't that bad of a career choice at this point

lol, dunno

Learn to cut down your steak before eating it and you should be ok. Unless you are a sword swallower then you dont have to worry.

waste of money. what will you do when you are reborn in the future society with no status, education, or money of the future society? you'll just reawake and live as a bum.

1. Eat more chikn.
2. you can do hemlich on yourself.
3. If Alcor can resurrect someone, they would only get the years left on their 'normal' life. You are acually gambling:
they can fix what you have,
wake you up,
have a way to extend you life,
and will still be able to pay the electric bill to keep your refrigerator on until then.

4. Considered and rejected. As a cryogenics engineer I have a pretty good idea of what happens to human tissues. Cell damage is pretty gross. Better to just preserve cells and let someone clone you when you move on. The you that you are will be gone, but the you that continues can complete the human reproductive strategy.

5. What good is insurance to you? Make enough money to pay for "return for deposit" fee, and spend the rest on a big party. If you have posterity, work harder, still have party, and leave rest to Momma and chilluns. Absolutely do not depend on the trustworthyness of a guy who will bet you that you will die before he thinks you will.

6. See a lawyer.
DO a living trust,
DO a living will,
DO an organ donor card,
DO think if you want to be a popsicle for a hungry survivor of the coming age of Obama.

LOL! I'm amazed at how you were able to remove that piece of stake with a fork down your throat! You have more talents than just being an astronomer. I do not know how to answer your question coz I myself would not think of Alcor even if I've had a big piece of steak down my throat now. Anyway's, I'll star your question to have some of my contacts answer it for you. I guess they have pretty good and weird views as well.

I just scanned over it and noticed this:

"Cryonics cannot work for anyone who is truly brain dead."

I'm not saying you're brain dead, lol, you're way smarter than I am, but I'm pointing out that if you had died of suffocation, wouldn't that make you brain dead?

Anyways, glad you're ok.

As for myself, no I don't think I'd consider it...not in this lifetime anyway. That kind of thing sounds weird. Maybe if I had lived way in the future, yeah.

But I think it's an option for those who have heart problems that just need time to get healthy again.

Answer by Misty M
OMG! I'm glad your ok. And please be more careful in the future.
But to answer your question. No I have never considered that. I would probably consider it if they had a feasible way to actually revive me. But until that time, I don't want to be a human popsicle.

Something stuck in the throat, been there and done that, pretty scary!

I think that Al-cor has the right idea but the wrong approach.

The best possible approach for preserving life and extending it is through human cloning. There are many reasons to believe this and most could be evaluated by way of animal cloning. I firmly believe that when a human being is cloned, because of the complex 4-dimensional nature of nuclei transfer and genomic reprogramming, that not only will the physical structures of the donor (the person being cloned) be expressed in the resulting clone, but so will the donor's consciousness as well. As the cloned person matures, they and their genomic donor could become one and the same person, occupying two locations in space-time simultaneously. It is a weird concept to get a grip on but it is has to do with the duality nature of quantum entanglement physics.

Even if all original consciousness did not get expressed in the cloned individual, all of the natural instincts, temperament style, and genetic based tendencies would be in place. There are a number of ways to approach the problem depending on what the true nature of a cloned human being might be -- of which we have no scientific basis for understanding. Just think of some of the potential possibilities: you could raise your own clone the way that you know you should have been raised; you might be able to have your whole conscious mind uploaded into a supercomputer (or a quantum computer) and then downloaded into the brain/mind of your clone. There are actual scientists and engineers working on this issue.

There is nothing magical about "self." One's own consciousness is just a combination of classical & quantum systems. These things can, perhaps, be isolated, manipulated, and transferred.

There are many, many possibilities but nothing can happen until we humans answer the fundamental question: would a human clone be truly human?

Human cloning could very well be to reproductive science and developmental biology what quantum mechanics is the Newtonian classical physics.

Wow! Good job getting the steak out of your throat!

My rich great-uncle did Alcor. His wife got him into the freezer shortly after he died of cancer. To be honest, it's a huge waste of time. I tried hard to stop myself from laughing when my great-aunt was telling me about it.

It wouldn't work, and it costs so much money... thousands of dollars a day
