I live in Canada, a country that is well known for having universal health care.
We are not bankrupt, despite many rumours, in fact, we're in a better financial situation than the USA.
We do not have to wait years to see specialists, and I'm speaking from personal experience here. I have a genetic disease that forces me to see a LOT of specialized doctors (and all other kinds of doctors, actually), and the most I've ever waited is a month or two. When I was in dire need, the wait time was much shorter.
We have taxes, yes, but they aren't so bad that they drain us of all our money. Furthermore, we get what we give through better health care.
Finally, everyone here can actually afford health care. There are no people trying desperately to get bootlegged medication because they can't afford the real stuff, no people avoiding going to get injuries checked out because of the huge medical bill they will have to face later.
This is my actual experience with universal health care. It is not theoretical. So why are people so horrified at the idea of everyone getting affordable health care? What is so bad about the HMOs not being able to screw people out of their health care anymore?
@God's Reporter: Um, no. I did not.
I can also assure you that there is no loss of freedom. You don't HAVE to have public health care, you can simply choose it if you want and/or need it. Some people choose private health care here, but the point is that public health care is there for those who need it.
@Viva Liberty: Actually, most Americans I know come up to Canada for health care. I know exactly zero Canadians who go down to the USA for it. And I know a lot of Canadians.

Didn't you post the same question earlier, but from the U.K. then?

We can't afford it. People need to be responsible for their own lives.

Because there are stories everyone of people needing something medically and not getting it for months or even years.. I know a woman who lives in Canada that needed a mammogram and she didn't get it for almost nine months.

I guess then you are aware of the cases in front of the Canadian Supreme Court regarding the right to see doctors outside of the system? People there don't want it...
Regardless, what scares me is the loss of freedom! I want the right to self insure, which I am about to lose!

Because being forced to pay for the health care of EVERY OTHER AMERICAN is un-American and unconstitutional.

I travel a lot and hear the same thing all over the world. The sad fact is that 49% of Americans don't want change, they are either privileged and don't care about others or just afraid of any change at all. They blindly repeat "we have the best system in the world" as if saying it over and over will make it so.
But we will overcome and maybe someday truly have the best system we can.

If you have to ask, I'm not going to bother to explain. Your people are coming down to US for care. That's all that need to be said.

Massive debt, that is what is so scary. Why do libs think there is no consequences for just going into deeper and deeper debt as our government just prints more money? The reality of what is going on will come to pass, and it will not be pretty.

Yeah I was wondering about that as well. Here in Holland everybody has affordable health care. Here, people don't die or become homeless because they can't afford surgery or whatever. It's a good thing.
I was shocked when I saw Michael Moore's 'Sicko'
