I have pre-trial conference coming up for a misdemeanor, and I'm wondering whether it would be advantageous to have a lawyer for that, or decide whether I should hire him after the pre-trial to see whether I might be able to handle it on my own or not.

Depends on your background and understanding of the legal system. Better safe than sorry I would have one.

Any man who represents himself has a fool for a client.

It's probably a good idea to have a lawyer at pretrial. You want to be sure you are not disclosing information that can condemn you later. They will know a little more about the system and be able to navigate better if brought in from the beginning.

Any time you have to deal with the legal system, it is always a good idea to have the advice of a lawyer.

About a year ago I decided that the faucet for my kitchen sink needed to be replaced. It was pretty old, leaking everywhere and it was just time. My wife told me I needed to call a plumber. No worries, I thought, I had a do-it-yourself book from Home Depot and it didn't look too hard.

I was wrong though. It was a very old sink and turned out to be very difficult due to the level of corrosion and the very heavy, old-school pipes. It didn't help that I didn't own the right kind of tools to cut through pipe, and looking back I'm not even sure I needed to cut those pipes out to begin with. Needless to say we still ended up calling a plumber only it ended up costing substantially more than it originally would have because they had to repair everything I had screwed up.
