I placed two pairs of jeans into the dry cleaners to get mended. They get mended on site and not contracted out.
However when I came to collect my jeans only one appeared.
They have said that I can claim compensation, and their insurers will pay as long as I issue them with an affidavit. Do I really need to pay for a lawyer / solicitor for this, for a pair of jeans - although originally costing over £100 - worth (probably) £50?

A affidavit should not cost you nothing more than a few minutes of your time. Simply type out a statement with all the information, just like what you wrote above. Give a description of what they were, What you dropped them off for, date when you dropped them off, date you went to collect them, who searched for them, and what the replacement value is. Also include a copy of any receipt or pick up tickets you might have gotten from the cleaners when you dropped the item off. Type all this out in a formal statement and sign it, Make copies so you have one and find out where to send it. That should work and won't cost you hardly anything..
