I'm an Independent Contractor Spanish Interpreter/Translator in Minnesota. I have excellent qualifications, but it's been difficult to gain clients independently. I'm also an excellent sales person, which my clients will attest. My schedule is very flexible so I'm looking to make money.

Hi, have you advertised? A friend of mine was a translator and she got quite a bit of referrals from the courts - that would be a good place to advertise. Contact someone there in the clerk's office and ask whom you should speak with.

Do you have business cards? A website? Promote yourself, advertise wherever you think your services are needed.

Apply with the state and county departments to work for the social departments. There's so much opportunity for you, I can't imagine you having a hard time.

Please check out my blog for tips on marketing your small business for free or cheap. You may find something that will apply to your particular line of service.

Good luck!

Try getting a job at HCMC or other jobs at hospitals in the twin cities.

Purdles gave some excellent advice. To add just a bit, your poetential market is so broad, that it becomes overwhelming. In the begining I would suggest narrowing your market a bit. Find a nitch or two.

But there are a few questions to be answered first. How much demand is there in your market? If it is a large market, contact every law office within what ever radius you are willing to travel. Second, you MUST talk to your local courts. What do they require of a translator? Bonding, ins. ect. Now start to expand your market a bit to include such places as tax preparers, numerous county agencies, go through the phone book one page at a time. Solicit thoses which make sense to you.

As was mentioned, business cards. You need them, and don't be bashful about handing them out. Flyers, again, don't be bashfull about handing them out. Check out godaddy.com web domains and hosting, may well be worth the time and money, only you can deciede.

you say you need some additional income, check this out.

Have you thought about Craigslist and Backpage.com? These are "cost free" advertising tools. Also, USFreeAds.com will let you post an ad for freee.

I speak/write Spanish here in Los Angeles and there are LOTS of small businesses that would like to "market" there product or service to the Spanish-speaking community. Check with your local Chamber of Commerce and service organizations for networking opportunities.
