One main difference is that solicitors have no right of audience in the High Court (only in Magistrates' and County Courts). Barristers have rights of audience in the Crown Court as well.
The other is that Solicitors know the Law backwards - they have to prepare briefs for barristers who are appearing in the High Court. which is not to say that all barristers DON'T know the Law!
