The Attorney General of the United States is the one in charge of the current Judicial system. He or she is the number one man or woman should ever the case be.
The solicitor general is the one who argues the governments case before the United States Supreme Court. They would be second in charge. Both are placed in their offices by the president but must be voted on by Congress to actually get the job.

The Attorney General is a Cabinet position who is in charge of the Justice Department. He/she is the top federal prosecutor and law enforcement officer and all US Attorneys report to him/her. They are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
The Solicitor General is the lawyer that represents the US Government in cases in the US Supreme Court. They are also appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
