Had spleen removed due to sports injury, can I still consume alcohol?

I recently had my spleen removed after lacerating it by means of sporting injury, and i was talking to some other people who have had removed spleens and they claim drinking alcohol makes them extremely sick now, and certain foods bother them as well. Most reports i have read online say that there should be no effect, but I would rather trust people who have lived without a spleen. Anyone know of any adverse effects?

Was your entire spleen removed or only part? The spleen can regenerate itself if some is left in. The spleen had nothing to do with the GI system. I have never heard of anyone who couldn't tolerate alcohol or any foods after a splenectomy, I'm wondering if they are confusing what the spleen does because of it's closeness to the liver, and therefore having these symptoms because they expect them.

Just because they have them, doesn't mean you will. You can still drink alcohol - in moderation, I hope for the good of you overall health, not because of the splenectomy. I haven't had a splenectomy myself, but I've taken care of quite a few post op, back in the days when people spent 5-6 days in the hospital routinely after surgeries. No one had problems with food. As to alcohol, we didn't serve that in the hospital back then!
