Generally, such an attorney will help you sue a former or (less likely) current employer for abuses in the workplace. These can include underpayment or non-payment of wages, discrimination based on sex, race, or other factors, dangerous conditions, wrongful termination, or other similar matters.
Punitive damages are additional payments above and beyond the harm caused to punish someone for a wrongful act. Say an employer had not paid you for your last two weeks, and cheated you out of $ 1200. If the court found the employer had been calculating about this, and fully intended to cheat you, they might award you extra money beyond the $ 1200 as punishment for stealing from you.
