I put an ad on GUMTREE.COM to say I am looking for a flat to rent.
I got an email back from someone who has a one bedroom flat for £400/ month so i replied saying i wanted to see it.
then he sent me this
Viewing the house is not a problem. But i will like you to do a thing. I guess you will understand this. It's in the policy my Solicitor has told me and i wish to abide by it. I won't get any money from you now. So you will do a thing to make me believe you really need the Property.I have been fooled several times and I had to travel a long journey with my Solicitor to meet people who wants to view my property and at the end of the day they tell me they want to stay in the Property for a month before they would pay me. I don't want this to happen to me anymore so My Solicitor has advised me that I have to be sure that who so ever is renting my property should be capable of paying the cost of the rent. You will go to the nearest WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER around you,Send to your Friend send the sum of 1,000pounds in WESTERN UNION. The money will still be within you and your friend. I am not ready to get any money from you as i have said. All I need to see is the WESTERN UNION copy of receipt giving to you. Scan the WESTERN UNION receipt and send it as an attachment to my email just for me to view it and be sure you are ready to get the Flat. after viewing the property, and you really like it,
You can go together to the WESTERN UNION location agent or bank around here to get the 1,000 pounds back and we can reach an agreement on how you will move into the property. I will pay back to you the charges you will be using in sending the money in WESTERN UNION. If you don't understand, Here is an examples of how to do it....
SENDERS NAME....................YOUR NAME
RECEIVER' NAME...................YOUR FRIEND NAME.
AMOUNT SENT.....................1,000POUNDS.
and scan the copy of receipt to me in an email just for me to view it.
and then i can pick you up and show you the property.
Best Regards.

Total scam---NEVER -I say NEVER send money like this..look at the flat with the owner-if you want it-exchange noney for the Lease and a receipt.

SCAM! SCAM! SCAM! Scanning a copy of the receipt will simply give him access to the money. Should you actually go there and try to get your money, rest assured it will gone already. The conman will have collected it by posing as your friend at the Western Union office. Hope this helps!

Common scam.
If it were real Western Union would not be involved, they might ask for proof of income, but not for you to be moving any money around.

Western Union won't care whose name the money is under. If he can provide your name, the date and the amount, he doesn't even need the scan with the MTCN--though having that number makes it just a bit easier for him. He won't be showing ID or anything to get the money. Once he picks up the money (anywhere in the world), it's GONE.
The apartment exists, but it's not his. He copied the description from someone else's ad. Notice he calls you a cheat and says that before you can view the property (which he doesn't own), he wants "proof" that you can afford it. And, no he doesn't have a lawyer either. It's just an excuse he's developed to get suckers to send him money.
By the way, he want's you to say you are sending the money to a friend because Western Union always asks if you know the person you are sending the money to. It's a policy they have because they are trying to interupt scams like this. When you don't tell them the truth--this is for a scammer in Nigeria who claims he has an aparemtnt to rent--they can't stop you from being a fool.
