Solicitors Journal: Closing the Justice Gap Panel Debate part 2

A panel debate held on the 31/03/2010 to mark the launch of Closing the Justice Gap, a collection of essays produced by legal think tank Jures and published by Solicitors Journal, drew a crowd of more than 100 legal aid lawyers. All contributors to the book had been asked to come up with new ideas to tackle the legal aid crisis, with no point scoring and no moaning about fees. The same ground rules applied to the panel debate held at Norton Rose's London office under the masterful chairmanship of newscaster Jon Snow. By and large the panellists complied with the brief. Well, nearly. Considering the panel included two senior politicians Lord Bach and shadow justice minister Henry Bellingham QC this sounded like an impossible task anyway, according to Jon Snow. But probably the most interesting breach of the rules was committed by Steve Hynes, the Legal Action Group director, who suggested the Conservatives had borrowed some of his thinking about alternative funding ideas. No hard feelings, he said as Henry Bellingham nodded, and in fact was quite pleased to see them endorsed in this way. He even expected Labour to borrow some too if the party remained in power after the May election.
