The top 10 boxer has no skills besides his world-class boxing skills. The mediocre mma fighter is ok but has several losses on his records along with a few ok wins. Who would win? It's a mma fight 3 rounds, 5 minutes.

the boxer. He would use his movement and jab to stop the mma guying moving in for the takedown and I don't think the mediocre mma guy would be smart enough to stay out in kicking range. I love mma but the fighters just aren't very good with their tactics.

So we're saying like a Scott Smith type middle of the raod fighter vs. like a Miguel Cotto

MMA, in addition to the fact there is a ground game with clinching, knees, elbows, wrestling, jui jitsu.

the smaller gloves will work in the favor of the mma guy, here's why; a boxer takes way to many flush shots, during a 12 round boxing match. taking shots like that for even three rounds with the smaller gloves, good luck. That's not even the fact he has to worry about getting kicked in the legs which can slow him down, or head kicks. It's like a kickboxer fighting a boxer....not to good in the long run.

It would be like anything - if the boxer can catch the MMA guy before he gets tackled he'll knock him out; if the MMA guy can avoid the boxer long enough to wrestle him to the ground, he would win.

Everyone has a sort of innate ability to try and wrestle, but if the boxer is going up against someone who trains to take people down, natural "takedown" defense won't be very effective. At the same time, if the boxer has a distinct quickness advantage the MMA guy would be in a lot of trouble trying to wade in. There are a number of successful guys in MMA that rely almost exclusively on their handspeed and power (Melvin Guillard comes to mind) they can be beat when taken to the ground, but often (unless its world class wrestlers) the well rounded MMA fighter doesn't get the chance to employ all his skills.

A top level boxer would beat a low level MMA fighter. Top level boxers are incredibly athletic, and fight smart. it would take a good MMA fighter to beat one.

This is a simple question. A MMA fighter will always have an advantage in a MMA fight. Any MMA fighter will take the boxer down and then work for a submission or ground-and-pound. The MMA fighter would easily win.

But on the flip side, an average boxer against a top MMA fighter will always win in a boxing match.

first off you will never see a top boxer at his peak (if at all) get into an MMA ring. Just not worth it to them.

Now to answer the hypothetical. If you taught a top boxer just how to guard on the ground and how to avoid most take downs then they would win. Just those simple moves to a highly skilled and trained boxer would allow him to dominate in the MMA ring.

The top boxers with just footwork alone would have most MMA guys whiffing at first. Not for long but in the beginning yes. Top boxers take years to develop footwork. And when I say years I mean 10 or more. And it is that footwork that would allow most of them to land the punch that would be enough to put most MMA fighters down. Not to mention that they know how to punch better than most MMA fighters. Punching correctly also takes quite sometime to master. A boxers jab would knock out most people.

The problem I see is that the boxer once having staggered the MMA fighter could not just step in and start trying to end the match like they do in boxing. Once you get close to the MMA fighter he will grab you or your legs for the take down. This is where the boxer has to be smart and stay on the outside and let the MMA guy come to him again. Or have that simple on the ground guard training to last and get back up in the middle of the ring.

MMA fighters are just street tough dudes that can take most people in a fight anyway. Add some basic training and some basic skills and you got an MMA guy. This is why you see so many of them. Most MMA guys are just really really tough. Not that skilled. It is not always the best skilled person that wins but the toughest and the one with the most will in MMA.

Most MMA fans will disagree with me, but hey they are fans. Most of the fans have never stepped into any ring anyway. They just want to see someone get knocked out and some blood. This also includes boxing fans as well.

Let the thumbs down begin. Ha ha ha...
