Does this mean that if you win you have to pay a huge fee? If so, is there anything to stop you having to pay more than you win i.e. end up in negative figures?

It is common that if you win, a fee has to be paid. However, this is usually taken from the other side on top of your compensation. Im not sure if this is always the case. The following site has a lot of useful information:

Means you have a negotiated percentage based on the concept that if the case is lost, you'll probably only have to pay the actual costs for filings and general work.
