to keep the cost down from going to solicitors, what steps do i need to take and how much would it cost for me to get divorced after 7 years separation. would i need my ex to sign papers to, i am still in touch with my ex but he has a new partner.

Divorce procedure differs from one govermental jurisdiction to another. Formal system is thru the court. Parties will petition for mutual consent or a contested divorce.

I hope he has paid child support over these seven years. If not, then just do him a favor...take him out back and shoot him. On a serious note, it should be the same as one year or so. Me and my ex were separated two years before our divorce. The main thing was I had paid her child support during that time frame. If you can work it out between yourselves and present it to a lawyer, then it goes much better. The lawyer can only represent one of you, and many times this is when the strife occurs...lawyers trying to pit one against another. Me and my ex remain great friends, but the legal system is not setup to promote this.
Normally a uncontested divorce is around 500 dollars and he does have to sign it. It is then sent to the judge who signs off on it.
