Hello,

Does anyone know where I can take a course to become a Workers Compensation Claims Adjuster in Phoenix Arizona???
I have been in workers compensation field for over 7 years, I have 5 years investigative experience and 2 years claims assistant experience. I want to now further my career by becoming a claims examiner; however I work for a private company and in order to work for an insurance company I need some certifications, that is why I want to take some workers compensation courses...

What exactly do you plan on doing with a course? You can't get hired in at a company, just with that course.

You can find courses, at your state insurance department website. Oh, and you need a LICENSE to adjust claims. But companies don't hire people without a bachelor's degree, and with no insurance experience.

MOST workers comp adjusters, started out adjusting something else, then transferring to the WC department. And, for the most part, training is done on the job, or through courses taught by the insurance company. Not open to the public . . .

You usually have to have some certification designations to qualify for an entry level WC Adjusting position. Some states don't require WC adjusters to maintain a state license, just completion and passing of certification courses or specialized training. Check with the AZ Department of Insurance for their requirements.

These are some common certifications: Associate in Claims (AIC), Workers' Compensation Claims Administration (WCCA), Workers Compensation Claims Professional (WCCP).

If you can add on Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), or any other related professional designations I'm sure that would be icing on the cake, but probably not a requirement. Both the AIC and CPC courses can be costly and they are tedious to complete.

You didn't say what your experience has been for 7 years. Most people transcend into WC positions in the company where they are employed and the company pays for their training and certification. It will be difficult for you to obtain a job w/o no actual adjusting experience, but with some certifications behind and your solid work history, the right opportunity might come your way.

I added a link to an on-line training site where you can get your WC certification as well as the AIC and CPCU if you chose to add those. I think you could start out with the WCCA and WCCP and then see where that takes you.

There's also a link to the AZ Department of Insurance.

Good Luck!

Update 8/16/08: Thanks for the additional info. With your extensive work experience, once you obtain the certifications, you will have no problems finding an entry level W/C position, with an insurance company, or one that will lead you into it.

Workers compensation adjusting is on the fly. I was placed in a desk and assigned a small amount of files. You work on them, you ask your managers questions and you continue to work, field calls and adjust their claims.

If you start out on this, you could start at as a medical only adjuster, those typically are the easy ones. The company that hires you will send you to some course to take the tests. Most courses are either though the state or through the defense attorney's office.

I would apply through a company, check out sites like Liberty, Chub, Wasau Insurance, Sedgwick or AIG. They normally are looking for people and willing to train.
This is how most companies do it. It's trial by fire, sink or swim.
