before moving on to private practice? If I work three years in a law firm, straight out of law school, will I be able to open my own office and make decent money?
Answer by nymamiyankee
depends on what type of law youre going to practice....

What will you be doing at the law firm? How big is the firm? How specialized will your work be? How large is the town where you want to go into private practice? What kind of private practice do you want to do? Can the town/city/whatever support the additional competition? (Or is there already cutthroat competition in the area of law you'd like to practice?)
There's no hard-and-fast rule for how this should work. But I'd strongly suggest you not let the law firm get the idea that you're only putting in a few years in order to get the practice to go out and compete against them - you can't expect them to like the idea that you aren't loyal to them.

Most lawyers who work at firms make more than private practicioners. Work at small firm if you're bent on learning to go it alone. I'd say 3-5 years.

Where are you going to get clients???? Better start joining networking groups like the chamber of commerce and so forth NOW...and join other business associations like the Rotary, and so forth...get involved in the community.
Lawyers are a dime a dozen...what does working for someone have to do with working on your own.....you are CERTAINLY not going to be able to solicit your fims clients unless you want to get your ass sued off.....!!!!!!!
