My neighbor is selling his car he bought from private party about 4 years ago.
The car's title is salvage but the owner claims they bought it from an auction with salvage title but the car was not involved in a car accident. No accident report or anything on record.
If a car has not been involved in an accident....why would it be salvage titled?
Are there other ways a car can be salvaged without it being involved in an accident?
Thank you all.....I am not the one buying the car though.
My neighbor is selling it and having a hard to explaining the reason the car is salvage title even though it has not been in any accidents.
Thank you everyone for all your answers. They were all very useful.

We found out the car an some sort of odometer issue.
We got the info off of Car Fax!

Theft more than likely

to the person: the damage would need to exceed more than half the value of the car to my knowledge to get that title
or sustained frame damage

Yes, it can. Its a common misconception that salvage means damage came from being in contact with another vehicle. Salvage simply means the vehicle suffered some form of damage and the insurance company felt it was better to total the car instead of fix the damage. A car that got hit by a hail storm can get a salvage title. And, as suggested, a car that was stolen or vandalized by some thief can be hit with salvage titles as well.

Post how it's known the car wasnt in an accident.

Did you search the VIN?

If car's low priced and older and the air bags deployed w/o being in an accident, or driver had a minor one-vehicle collision that deployed airbags, the insurance co might total it if the airbag replacement cost were high enough. That cost can be as much as $ 5,200 on some Mercedes.

And it could be a flood salvage. Some state's titles would specify reason for Salvage title.

Yes -- you can have a salvage title from any event that impairs the vehicle to the point that it is declared a total loss or "totalled" by an insurance company.

Frankly based on the date that you are indicating it could even be one of the vehicles that was damaged from flooding as a result of Hurricane Katrina since it took so long to process claims during that period due to the nature of that catastrophic occurrence.

Regardless of how the vehicle was damaged -- bear in mind that the fact that it was totalled does severely affect the resale value and could result in some companies refusing to insure it. It could still be a bargain as long as you check it out thoroughly (consider obtaining the assistance of a mechanic to give you a professional evaluation prior to purchase) and you are buying it with your eyes wide open.

Have you pulled a CARFAX report?

I hope this information helps. Good Luck

Could have been a salvage vehicle for a number of reasons (fire, theft, flood etc.).
