More specifically, who is responsible for contacting the insurance company and what is the appropriate protocol . Do I need to 1) contact their insurance company and mine, or 2) contact my insurance company and let them do the leg work, or 3) only need to contact their insurance company.

Call your insurance company.
It is THEIR job to do everything necessary to pursue your claim.
That's why you pay them.
Uwish, sorry, but your answer may be from the perspective of the insurance company trying to save money, but it is not correct.
You are in NO WAY obligated to contact the other drivers insurance company. It's not even recommended.
YOUR insurance company is LEGALLY OBLIGATED to pursue the matter on your behalf.

Contact both companies. Don't depend on the other driver to report it to their carrier, and that way you know its done.
Call your company too, let them know about the accident but tell them you are not pursuing your own policy, and that you are going trhur the other company. (That way if anything goes sour w/ the other company, you can call yours right away and they can take over the claim, bc you already reported it)
OR you can always just go thru your own policy and pay your deductible. After your vehicle is repaired they will subrogate against the other carrier to get all the money back.
Its really your call here. Hope this helps!
