They need to - otherwise they could file a lawsuit based on what you tell them your witnesses have to say, and then later they find out you are lying, or witnesses aren't willing, or their stories differ...

The lawyer had better talk to your witnesses before putting them on the stand. He should know everything they are going to say so there are no surprises. He should also ask them any questions he thinks the other attorney may ask, again so there are not going to be any surprises.
