no fee claims

If car towed off private property and no notice given am I obligated to pay any fees that they claim I will have to pay before returning my vehicle. Is a blank company sticker from that towing company placed on my car considered notice? If no notice is required how does one find out who has the vehicle?

No they're not obligated to tell you. If it's on private property and the property is not yours, then the owner has every right to tow.

Start calling towing companies.

No they dont have to give you notice b/c often there is a sign of some sort saying " no parking private property" etc which means all violators will be towed. It sucks (I have had it happen) but invariably the only way to get your car back is to check with the company/apartment complex/resturant etc to see who they contract with or call to tow vehicles. Towing companys dont randomly pick people to tow. They are ususally contracted with the city to tow parking violators or if it is an individual or small bussiness they are notified by that person that there is a violator to be towed. Dont be mad at the tow people be mad at the place you were towed from. If they didnt have a sign saying that you couldnt park there or you would be towed, ask THEM to pay your fees.

contact your local police department and report it as being towed....towing companies call police departments and inform them that they are towing a vehicle so the owner doesn't call and report it stolen...you will also have to pay any fee before you get your car back

If the car was towed from a private property, it was probably because it was parked illegally and the management (or the owner) complained.

And no, they don't have to notified the owner.

Call the police as the towing company must notify the police.

Good Luck...

This is what I have learned from people in your situation......

The car can be towed without notifying you as long as the owner of the private property has posted signs that state this and without this you could win your fight...........

Your local police department can tell you if your state requires these signs....

This is for property like shopping centers and groceries stores but does not apply to residential property.......

If your car was parked in a marked area (e.g.: Parking for 'X' customers only, violators will be towed), then no they're not required to notify you. If, however, your car was parked, say in the parking lot of an apartment complex, in a legal parking space, then yes, they are required to notify you (at least in the state of Indiana). I wouldn't consider a blank sticker as a notice. Generally they'll try to mail something to either the last recorded owner of the car (they run the plate numbers) or to the person with that car listed on a lease, in the case of a rental property. I'd respond quickly though, as many towing companies will auction off a car that sits on their lot longer than a certain period of time, which depends on the company. Call them and see why it was towed, why you weren't notified, and what can be done about getting the vehicle back.
