I keep getting "Unknown Name, Unknown Caller" on my caller I.D. Finally, I picked it up and the guy said he was with a fundraising effort, but wouldn't say who, since I wouldn't let him talk to the family member he was calling.
Where do these people get our phone numbers from?

They buy lists of phone numbers from companies that have yours and other people's phone numbers on file.
I've even heard rumours about a certain phone company selling phone numbers, unlisted ones I might add, to telemarketers.

They go number by numer e.g 425-868-1111,then 1112, 1113 and so on down the line. Been there, done it. Hated it, telemarketing!!! Some are lists they purchase.

I believe unlisted doesnt include fundraising calls, just marketing sales kinds.
But they will pay companies who have your phone number.

I am unlisted too, i would love to know! I blow a whistle in their ear each and every time i get a call that is trying to sell me something...st jude called me today twice!!

your number was probably sold to a marketing company by someone you did business with or bought something from

Probably if you give your phone number out at a store or something they sell the info, or if you have to put your number on a form. My number is unlisted too so I make sure if I have to give my phone number it is with someone I know doesn't give out the information to third parties.

they might have gotten it online if you ever filled out something online and it says its affiliated with "said company" who in turn will call you about opportunities and free stuff and blah blah blah if you just pay 9.99 or however much they want...pisses me off
