I was unemployed for 9 months and overdrafted my Wachovia account for $ 30 in fees, which bloomed into $ 300 in fees. I'm either not paying Wachovia or claiming it on my Bankruptcy. I would like a checking account so I can have direct deposit at my new, mediocre job. However, most banks want to charge me a monthly fee because I owe Wachovia money. Any way to avoid this?

Just open an account at a bank that has free accounts. Usually they require direct deposit.

You won't be able to get a no-fee account until your issue with Wachovia is cleared up either by paying it off or having it discharged in your bankruptcy petition.

Have you considered speaking with Wachovia and offering to pay the bounced check and its associated fee, and asking them to forgive the accumulated fees - explain your situation and they may just help you out.

If there is a Woodforest Bank near you (some of them are in Walmarts) they have a deal where they will let you open a checking account, even with you owing another bank money. I think the account is only $ 10/month, no check fees and they will give you a debit card.
