The call left an automated message on my answering machine saying I have a debt. My credit record has been clean for years, and I've never been in debt. What do I do?
I've heard some suspicious things about this law office; some claim it's a scam, others claim it's not a law office at all.

call them back and ask about it. see what it is and try and clear it up. maybe they had the wrong # if it was an automated message

If in fact you have no debt. Then call them, maybe a wrong number?
or someone got hold of your personal information. Ask what info they have, name, ss#,address, place of employment. (but don't you give them your info" if its wrong, say so. If they persist ask for documents you signed in writing. (like credit application) the Original creditors will have this. Hopefully they just dialed a wrong number. and no one has stolen your Identity. If so, you have a long road ahead of you, and will have to call your credit card companies, etc. also, have a fraud alert put on your credit report. They now have companies that will verify its you when you apply for new credit, by calling and asking you. I hope all works out for you.

If you have no debts then ignore the message. Check your credit report to make sure that nothing has been put on it by mistake.

Identity Theft?

Answer by Pablo
Not all debts are on your credit report. Did the message specifically ask for you? Assume it did, call them back and find out what it is. Ignoring it doesn't make that go away. If it is for you and you want proof you'll have to get their information to request documentation. If you want you can recrord the call.
