i have called up the firm and they charge $ 150/hour for the initial consultation. i haven't called up the private practice lawyer yet. is there any advantage of hiring a person who is a partner in a firm as opposed to a solo practitioner?

Not necessarily. A partner in a firm probably has more experience, might be able to get you a bigger divorce settlement if you're trying to take your husband to the cleaners. Otherwise your run of the mill divorce is easily handled by a solo practitioner.

Lawyers in firms keep their jobs by billing sufficient weekly hours.
Theoretically this all in the end makes them more efficient.
(I have doubts about that myself.)
