Can I claim compensation from my bank?

Posted by 70sfamily | 6:57:00 PM

My bank recently sent me a couple of letters addressed to my late father who died 6 years ago but with all my details (sort code, account number) as addressed to my father my mother opened these out of curiosity to find out I had a loan which she was unaware of. I phoned the bank to complain and have received a letter calling it a system error and an apology. Do I have grounds to some sort of compensation? This has caused a lot of friction in my household as well as a lot of distress.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you complain enough, you may get a goodwill payment. I would presume that the bank were aware of your father's demise. I would point out to them that they have a duty of care to you to keep all your information confidential and not share that with any third party without your permission or other than required by law. If you don't get satisfaction at branch level, do not be afraid to bring this higher. Banks are getting enough bad publicity they don't need more!
