If I know I will be independent when I attend school next year (meaning that no aid will come from parents to attend school), should I claim myself as an independent although I will only be 18. Or will there be more of a benefit if they claim me, and I still pay my own fees

Here is the link regarding being independent. You can't "choose" to do it if you do not meet the criteria. Most 18 - 24 year olds don't meet the criteria and have to report parents info. Note: it does not matter who claims you (or doesn't claim you) on tax forms, whether you live with your folks or not, or even if they plan on paying for your education.
