I live in Columbus and my apartment complex advertises plainly on the entrance to the area that there aren't to be solicitors or handbills.

I come home to find my door stuffed with a very uncouth Baptist leaflet, stating that "My joy and sorrow for all eternity" depends on my comprehension of their filthy little pamphlet because if I don't understand I should (and I QUOTE) "read this tract over and over, without laying it down until you understand it."

Come on. I know, I know...these silly bastards want to "help" people, by being imperialistically inclined in their religious beliefs...but I'd wager if I got dressed up on Sunday, went to this church and sat in its congregation, waited for the preacher to get nice and ready, and then stood up in the middle of it and loudly proclaimed my superior belief that we were actually sent to Earth by sentient cows that live on the far side of Jupiter, and that EVERYONE better heed my words because their ETERNAL SNARF (my religion's word for souls) DEPENDS ON IT!!!! OMG!!.....I bet nobody would like that, I'd probably get thrown out, maybe even charged with "Disturbing the peace" or, more realistically, a Hate Crime.

All I want is to know the maximum extent of punishment, however petty, a 5 dollar fine, whatever, that I could at least threaten these people with as punishment if I ever see a church leaflet at my apartment again. It sickens me. As I "fantasized" above, they've entered my place of worship (my home) and filled it with their silly-sounding propagandist lies about something that SOUNDS important, like my Eternal Snarf. I take my Snarf very seriously.

Thanks.

If someone refuses to leave when approached, it's easier for the police to charge them with trespassing.

Pretty much it.

They would be arrested and charged with criminal trespass if you want to press the issue with the police. If they don't have a permit (they likely have one) for soliciting they can be fined for that. They can be arrested for it if, when you call the police, you state that you thought they were trying to check out the neighborhood, see who was home with criminal intent.

This happend to me before when I lived in a large apt community. Almost daily some junk was left on the door and those annoying jahovas witness people riding bicycles dressed in a suit on a 90 degree day would come a knocking at least 3 times a week. SO ANNOYING! I finally put up a no solicitors sign and a beware of dog sign on my door and that cut it down to less than half of what I was getting before the signs.
