Trying to figure out if I should take the tuition and fees deduction on my taxes. I don't have any liability but didn't know if I claimed the tuition and fee's deduction if I would get more of a return. Right now I'm taking standard deduction for a joint return. It says you don't have to itemize to take this deduction. Since I have no liability would these cause me to get more of a return? I paid out of pocket with no help for a full year college. I don't qualify for any of the other education credits due to no tax liability and this is past my post secondary so was told can take this only. I have the 1098-t tuition statement......
thanks in advance for any help.

yes, you apply the 1098T to the education credit that you are entitled to, and that would be the Lifetime or the American Opportunity credit
it is possible with the latter to actually refund you some

If you already have no tax liability a tuition and fees deduction will not provide any benefit. The most a tuition and fees deduction can do is reduce taxable income to zero. There is nothing refundable if you already have no tax liability.

Since you have no tax liability, the tuition and fees deduction won't help you.
And the only refundable education credit is American Opportunity, but that's only for undergrads.
So there's really nothing you can take. Sorry.

If you have no tax liability, the tuition and fees deduction would give you nothing.
