Is Markel insurance a scam?

NO SPAM.

I'm looking for medical insurance and went through a broker/referral site to get a quote. They ended up giving me a quote for Markel Insurance claiming that its usually reserved for companies but for a limited time they are giving it to the public for a sign up fee. They claim there is no deductible and it covers everything but maternity. I got two rates, one lower from two different sources.

Now, they won't stop calling me and I get a minimum of 10 calls a day about it. I don't have a good feeling about it, but as they told me a dozen times..Markel has an A+ BBB rating, etc.

Is this a scam or should I go for it? How do I make them stop calling me?

They may have some really obnoxious sales persons since they call you so often.

In general terms they are probably NOT a bad organization to deal with. I looked them up at Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Markel insurance has an A+ rating, the highest possible. Check for yourself.

A search on RipOffReport.com came up with this story:

as for how to get them to stop calling
Just tell them that you can file charges
for harassment by phone.... so they
either stop calling, or they are busted.

as for the insurance, I'm not sure what they are offering
be sure to read the fine print!

One complaint said that over the phone they told them that it would cover maternity.
But when they paid and got the papers, the papers stated that
"(the plan absolutely didn't cover maternity care)."

Read the rest at:

Also google the company followed by the word (s):
Complaint, scam, review
The company is fairly new, not too many complaints out there.
Personal opinion: I would go with someone that has been around a bit longer.

LOL good luck on the no spam thing, in the insurance section.

Markel is NOT a scam. It's an insurance brokerage agency that specializes in outdoor/adventure risks. The only individual health insurance they sell, is a short term major medical. I promise, they're not "bending the rules" to allow you onto their group limited benefit (crap coverage - $ 80 a year for doctor visits? Total?) plan - they'd be shut down so fast your head would spin. They do have a major medical (with deductibles) short term plan, but it doesn't cover maintenance stuff.

But those referral sites are. See, the point of them is either to harvest your personal information to sell as leads, OR, to steer you towards one company, that pays them to do that.

What happened, was that you got fed a bogus program by that referral site, which then sold your information to THOUSANDS of different agents, telling them you wanted to buy insurance. You're going to have to change your number.

And THAT is why it's a crappy idea to shop for insurance online. And one more thing - any kind of "no deductible" plan is probably a DISCOUNT plan - not insurance. That's why there's no deductible - they're selling you a discount. They won't ever PAY.

You have to look at COVERAGE and LIMITS when you buy health insurance, not just deductible and monthly cost.

I use them for motorcycle insurance. They are legit.

The reason that they have an A+ rating is probably that they have not yet been selling to the public for long enough for complaints against them to be filed and processed by the BBB, for the BBB to give them long enough to respond (sometimes they get several months), and for the complaints to affect their rating. If they have been around for a long time (even if they were selling only to businesses during most of that time) and the complaints began too recently to affect their rating (because they only recently started selling to the public), then they get an A+ rating -- solely because they were in business for a long time without getting complaints from public customers (because there were not any).
