Car Accident Claim Question?

I did not get the license number from the other party until later that day of the accident. I heard wrong and put down one wrong letter and that is the license plate number I put on the police report. I am asking the other party for the right license plate number and they are not responding. Is it my fault now that I could not get the right license plate number and can I still file a claim? Is the other party obligated to give the license plate number?

Call the police department or preferably the officer who did the report (if there was one) and tell them/him/her that you made an honest mistake on a letter of the other car's plates (because you did). The police can contact or track down the other driver and get the correct plate number/letter - the other driver is obligated to give you/the polce the correct information.

If you have the other information correct, the license plate number shouldn't matter much. I often handle claims where one item, a plate number, or a VIN, or some other fact of the case, has one wrong digit. But if the other information matches, it's usually pretty easy to show which vehicle you're talking about. If the license plate number was the only information you had, it's crucial. If you have lots of other info, it's not such a big deal. Police and insurance companies can find out the correct number without calling the other party.
