What would be the legalities involved?

Myself and my partner have a live in job in sussex. We have a flat that we thought was owned and run by the managing agents (who we work for) but it turns out they have nothing to do with it. They don't own it and they don't manage it. The company who used to run it have been dissolved so technically it isn't owned by anyone. (Personally speaking, I think it must be owned by somebody?) Do we have any legal rights to claim ownership? Should we speak to a solicitor? Thanks in advance.

Since you ask this in the USA section of Yahoo Answers, the in the USA all you have to do is do a property search with the county records to find the legal owner.

An owner and a manager are not the same thing. Just because a property manager business had dissolved, that doesn't mean that there isn't an owner of the property. Even a bank can be the owner of a property if someone defaults on the bank loan. You can't just swoop in and say you own the property. Did you sign a rental agreement when you moved into the property? If you can't find who is legally the responsible party, then place the rent money in a separate bank account as rent payment in good faith and keep on paying it there until the actual responsible party can be legally identified. No judge will kick you out if you have this separately designated account set up and deposit rent payment into it while you have a question about it.
