I absolutely cannot stand solicitors who call my work. Even worse, some of them have the nerve to be rude to me. Today, someone called and asked for my boss- no hello, hi, nothing. I asked who he was and where he was calling from. He responded so fast that I only caught his first name. I asked him to repeat himself, only to be reprimanded with, "I'm going to repeat myself one more time, and then you transfer me to your boss." I told my boss about this rude caller, and boss told me to take down a number. I then asked the caller for a number, only to be HUNG UP ON. How do you deal with solicitors?

Especially at work I respond with "Are you aware that this is a workplace? Soliciting a workplace is unacceptable." and I hang up on them. Either that or I put them on hold indefinitely.

This happens at my office all the time. Yesterday a guy called from a 1-800 number. When I said hello he said, "Hi, who am I calling?" I said who we are, and he said, "Is the boss in?" I didn't put him through obviously. If these people can't even keep track of what number they're calling, let alone find out who the owner is, they're not getting put through.

I've also been hung up on, and had some very rude comments made to me. Even after I tell them I'll take their number and my boss will call them back, they still keep calling! Sometimes it's the same person more than once a day, and it's obvious they don't realize they already called me that day.

I think next time it happens I'm going to call them back and ask for their manager. Also, someone once told me that when you ask telemarketers to be taken off their calling list, make sure you specify that you want off ALL their lists, b/c a lot of them are calling on behalf of more than one company.

The best way to deal with this is to advise the caller that your boss does not accept calls of this nature. If they would like to set up an appointment, you would be happy to set that up.

Another good way to get them off the line is to ask them which boss they would like to speak with, as different matters are handled by different supervisors. If they can't give you a name, you cannot connect their call.

Unfortunatley, there will always be business to business cold calls. Good luck!

I say No, no, noooooo, I don't have time for this! I will call you back when I get time ! Good-bye !

I tell them our number is on the national no call list. Google it, sign your phone numbers up and if a solicitor calls you inform them that if they call again you will seek the monetary sanction against them from the court. The court allows for a $ 500 sanction to be placed against any solicitor who knowingly calls a "no call" number.

I get those same kind of calls at work too and they drive me nuts especially when the person is a complete jerk. Honestly they are just trying to get some type of sale and get frustrated when they can't get through to the intended person. Luckily I have the luxury to send all those "solicitor" calls to our fax machine # and they usually get the message. I have a few that will call me back and I just resend them to our fax machine. Occassionally I get a rude one and I just get rude right back with them, then that is when they usually hang up in my face.

As soon as I am positive that it is a solicitor, I ask them to hold while I transfer and then either "accidently" hit the hang up button, or place them on hold and forget about it. I got permission from my employer for this however. Your boss may have a different way that he would like it handled so you may want to discuss his preferred method of dealing with solicitors before taking further actions.

If they are not getting what they want then you *ARE* dealing with them and dealing with them effectively!

Personally I tell them to come out to my house. When they show up at the door I tell them no thank you. If they get pissed I just say "you called me I did not call you!"

If they ask for a number, and they are local, and you only have 1 area code, tell them your number 911-3527. When they go to call you back, as soon as they get the 911 done they get connected to the police...

Also, if their number comes up on caller ID, I put the number in a war dialer and ring their phone off the hook.

If they have a fax machine I fax them 100 page file I have that just says so not call and I do it on a weekend evening so they come in Monday to a mess on the floor.

Seems to work.

Good luck!

I usually just plague them with questions till they get so annoyed they hang up. I ask their name, company, what the nature of their business is, how they received the number to the office, exactly what they need to talk to my boss about, then I put them on hold for about 10 minutes, if they are still there, I ask to take a message and ask them the above questions again, then I ask them if they are selling something, when they say yes, I ask to be put on their do not call list. It works every time.

I put them on "hold" and then "accidentally" forget to transfer them. I once had someone hang on for 45 minutes.
As for the rude calls I asked my boss how to deal with that and he said that if a solicitor is rude then let him know so I tell them that I won't be talked to like that and I hang up.
To bad it doesn't work for clients though. You always have to be professional with clients.
