I'm in the UK and I want to sue a US blogger who has written libel about me. I am not poor but would probably not afford to go through with hiring a solicitor etc. What are the average costs? And is it worth my while to sue for damages?

Heaven's no.

Consult a solicitor would be my best advice. However, you must also take into consideration that this would also involve international law and may not be judicially economic.
I think your best course of action is to (once again) consult a solicitor, especially one knowledgeable in international litigation.

If you don't want to go through the hassle then you should THREATEN to sue. Also, you should make him issue a retraction.
You could also have a claim for false light. Be sure if you sue that the other party has money to collect. Remember, what he is saying has to be proven untrue and not just that you don't like it.
Here is an article on false light which is almost the same thing as defamation. The main difference is that with false light you can't unring a bell. You can't just print a retraction because the damage has already been done to your character.
If it is severe enough I would say go for it. Remember you want an attorney who has experience with libel and slander cases, not just a general practice attorney who handles all sorts of different cases.
