Well, there are two types of lawyer. There is a good one that gets you away with what ever you did. Or, there is a bad one that gets you thrown in jail.

All lawyers go through the same experience at law school, lawyers do not specialize the way you see in college while at school. There are no "majors" in law school, although you can declare a concentration, but this is not required.
In terms of different type there are many different lawyers out there, every field of human interaction is governed by laws, and invariably they all will break down from time to time. In terms of agreed upon divisions off the top of my head I can think of, personal injury, criminal, business/corporate, elder/estates law, tax law, administrative law, public interest, constitutional, contracts, oil and gas, admiralty, aviation, international, alternative dispute resolution, governmental, property, election law, class action, medical malpractice, toxic torts, appellate, and I'm sure I'm missing a few and there is considerable overlap.
In terms of money, corporate lawyers make a lot coming out of the gate, it's not uncommon to see a corporate lawyer at a large firm start above 140,000 a year. These are extremely in demand positions, so you will need to be at the very top your class to get into some of these firms. The average starting salary for attorneys is about 60,000 a year.

The basic answer for the types are transactional and litigation attorneys. Transactional lawyers handle issues that arise out of transactions between entities, usually corporations. An attorney that does transactional work doesn't typically handle trial work, but rather writes briefs and contracts, handles documents related to securities filings and general corporate matters. You are far removed from clients and your client is often a large company. These types of jobs are often with large firms in more urban settings and pay the highest. The hours are extremely long. First year associates usually work between 75-95 hours a week. The highest pay in some of these firms right now is upwards of $ 160k-$ 170k with bonuses of $ 20k-$ 50k.
The big firms mentioned above also offer litigation work, but a lot of litigation tends to fall to smaller firms. Litigation involves things like personal injury, family law, probate issues, criminal defense, etc. The pay in a smaller firm varies, but the average is around $ 55k starting off.
Finally, the government is its own niche. As a government attorney, you can help form policy, prosecute criminals, or assist in the judicial process as a clerk to name a few. The pay varies depending upon the agency, anywhere from the low 30's to mid 50's or 60's to start.
You learn the very basics your first year of law school (torts, contracts, crim. law, civil procedure, legal writing, etc.). After that you'll want to focus on classes that will help you pass the bar and that will help you land the job...that means get good grades! Beating the curve is the name of the game!
Good Luck
