We had a chef that came to our pub, he was taking a room in the pub. He asked my partner if he could have a rent book she did not think nothing of it he told her that he just needed it for council tax and other reason. The chef did not pay rent the room was included in the job, after several weeks he started to not come out of his room for work that was after disagreements on how he should run the kitchen. After this happening several times, we decided we did not want him as chef and said he would have to leave his position as we lost alot of weekend trade because of his actions. He left the pub, but is now claiming that he was illegally evicted and now has a solicitor who is saying his client wants compensation. What can we do? He was just a chef and never paid any rent for his room!!! He left the pub we did not force him to leave, he handed the key over and just left.
Could someone please let us know where we stand in the eyes of the law?

You didn't say where you live and where the pub is. Are you in the EU? You likely need to consult local codes on eviction. In any case, I'd get a good lawyer/solicitor.

Get a lawyer. Anything he wrote on that rent book is not your handwriting anyway. Keep your position. He and his lawyer are probably hoping to scare you into giving him compensation for nothing.
