this person claims a head injury and talks about short term memory. Claims they have a hard time learning in school but takes normal courses and makes A & B's. Can some of this be a put on.

Some disabilities are not as obvious as others. That doesn't mean there is not one. This person may have found ways to compensate or function successfully with their disability . As a parent with a child with a learning disability I know 1st hand. His is not so obvious to others so there fore he runs the risk as being told he is not trying or lazy or some other negative accusations. I had him tested by a neuro psychologist. My son does the best that he can and works very hard and has received honor rolls in school. Yet still he has learning issues.

sometimes the only evidence of a brain injury is through a neuropsyhological exam.
It is possible for some people to remember academics with a LOT more studying..for iinstance, I will have to continuously practice something until it passes into long term memory. I used to be able to memorize things easily, now I may have to practice for a long time..and on a daily....it took 8 years before I could read a magazine article with minimal difficulty..i used to have to reread continuously--it could take hours..now it only takes a few extra minutes..i don'tremember all of it, but i can at least follow the story...i still can't read a book (i might be able to, but it will takes weeks of rereading)
this person might be getting accommodations that you don't know about

Some accidental brain injuries can get better over time - sometimes brains get retrained - but typically some vestiges of the disability is still there.
