Mandatory essay question: Please discuss the following (300 word minimum): Tell us something unique about you, why you chose your particular major, and how you expect Duquesne University to help you achieve your academic, personal and professional goals. Please include any examples of your research, shadowing or volunteer experiences.

I am a runner. Many regrets have come from my decision to take up running, but at the same time, if I had not joined the Track team, I would not be who I am today. When I became injured the cycle of blurred doctors' appointments began. After two months of multiple doctors, my second physical therapist suggested a bone scan and a MRI, which showed I had a stress fracture of my right tibia. After many weeks on crutches, I had unexplainable foot pain. From there I saw a foot specialist, nerve specialist, pain specialist, two physical therapists, a homeopath, chiropractor and other doctors as well. It was not until a year and a half later when I started to get better by nursing myself back through biking. When I went back to see my physical therapist, he postulated that the under usage and mechanics from not using my leg or foot was causing this pain. He worked with me to build strength in my leg and then suggested running!
My injury has changed my life. I refuse to take exercise for granted again. As I am still recovering, I take into consideration the strength of the body and how much stress it can really handle. During the months of seeing many doctors and not being able to diagnose my injury, I really became interested in the medical field. I hope to one day be able to solve other peoples problems and have answers for my patients. I have always found the fast pace world of a hospital and the excitement of helping others exhilarating.
Recently I have interviewed a friend who is a pharmacist at Kenmore Mercy Hospital, in Kenmore, New York. I wanted to get a first hand perspective on what pharmacy is all about. She told me the most satisfying part of her job is at the end of the day seeing how a patient has rebound since that morning and is on the path to recovery. A situation like that would really get me going as well! Being successful is a great rush.
In addition, during my interview, I also asked what the typical day of a pharmacist in a hospital consists of. She told me in the mornings she usually has meetings and also advises physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications. Next she visits the different floors to report on patients and monitor the health and progress in response to drug therapy. She also must answer questions about prescription drugs, including questions about possible side effects as well as recommend different over the counter drugs.
Duquesne would be a great University for me to develop the skills needed to pursue a career in Pharmacy. After visiting Duquesne for the open house, watching the pharmacy presentation as well as talking with present pharmacy students I believe Duquesne's program is ideal.

I think your essay looks like it was well planned out, but I don't think it was well executed.

There are actually quite a few grammar issues, and I think it would be in your best interest to bring the essay to an English teacher to have it evaluated and fixed.

Also, the first paragraph (the introductory paragraph) could be a bit stronger. Being the reader, I feel like everything is being thrown at me all at once without much explanation.

Though as I said, it was well planned out. It flows quite well and really explains how you gained interest in the medical field. My suggestion is to find a teacher or adult you can trust to look over your paper to make sure it's the best it can be.

Good luck! =]
