A few weeks ago, some neighbours claimed I bumped their parked car. To cut a long story short, we dispute this but the neighbour is very dodgy and made sure we would be the ones to blaim. He is in the police and said he would get "one of his mates" in forensics to chow the paint matched". He called the police and what not who automatically took his side and were not interested in my opinion at all.
I am a new driver and my insurance is extortionate so after the threats the neighbour made about taking it to court and what not we agreed the easy option would just be to pay up - avoiding going via insurance.
However, 3 weeks later we still have not heard anymore, no bills from mechanics or anything. My husband are going away on holiday week after next for 2 weeks and I dont want this to get out of hand again because we're away. He's never in for us to call round and to be honest we are rather intimidated by him to go knocking on his door.
So my question is - if he decides in a few months he finally wants the money - can he do that or is there a time frame he has to ask for it within.
Many thanks

They can sue you for this anytime they wish, but...............it is extremely foolish for you NOT to use your insurance. What will you do after you pay him and then he decides that some hidden damage was found and now he wants more? How about if he demands money for a rental while his car is in the shop? You have insurance for just such an incident..... Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Use your insurance....

This makes absolutely no sense. Your neighbors claim you bumped their parked car, but you dispute this. Then you go on to say that you will be paying for their damages and are waiting for the bill?
Why you choose not to file a claim with your insurance company is beyond me. If you are not responsible, your insurance company will deny it and even if they were to sue you, YOUR insurance company will provide a lawyer free of charge to protect you.
Your insurance company will have an appraiser to see if indeed the damages to your car and his matches or not.
call them today.
good luck

It depends your your state but typically I would say he has about 2 years to make a claim against you for the damage. I suggest you contact your insurance. Your premiums might go up because of it but at least if he sues you for anything they will pay for all of that.

Look notify your insurance if only for information only. In my view it is a case of letting them worry about it. My own view is that this may be a con and if it is it will not be the first time, He appears to know the score. Insurance companies often pick up on this thing and if he takes you to Court the insurance company will act in your name under subrogation. You just copy all documents and send the originals to them. Yes your premium will go up if they pay out. He actually has six years (UK) so the insurance route is the best one and they will be the ones to take him to task over delay. Police are always non committal in accidents so do not read anything into it.
Always bare in mind that even apparently minor damage can cost a lot to repair so go the insurance route and save yourself sleepless nights.
The fact that he has a "Mate" to do the job would indicate that either he has no insurance or it was an accident with another party maybe his fault and he is using your inexperience.
If you are truly the guilty party he would have no hesitation in notifying his insurance to claim against yours and his car would almost certainly be repaired by now if he is fully comp. .
