Seems to me that a medical issue caused by working at ground zero is directly related to the job. Why is't the existing workers compensation system handling these medical claims?

Answer by LadyB
Many of the workers VOLUNTEERED to clean up Ground Zero, therefore, they have been turned down by Workers Compensation because they do NOT consider it "directly related to their job."

It is despicable to me why ANYONE with a soul would deny these heroes ANY HELP.

They have to be,,,,,it is mandated by WC law.

Volunteers are not first responders and if they did take it upon themselves to help and are adults they pay the piper. Why is everyone looking for safeguards in life?

Because the city of NY is self insured, which means that to compensate the large number of people damaged by this attack, including the Fire and Police dept. the city would not have enough money to help them.
They are not covered by Workmans Comp, and if they were, and it were kicked up to the State Levels, then the State would go broke and still not have enough.

The magnitude of the disaster is unprecedented, No one could have predicted this, and no single city or state can take care of it on their own, even in good times.
One other thing, if those people were to take the Federal government to court, they would stand a good chance of winning even more money. It was the Feds, under Bush who claimed the air quality was good, and no more than a paper mask would be needed. That rather puts culpability on their part in a lawsuit.

the reason why thier med issues weren't and aren't being covered by worker's comp is the time delay between disaster and illness, they weren't proof positive that the two were linked at the time. after that to much time went by and workers comp is or would not be liable.

I don't care if one of those people had insurance enough for 8 lives. What they did was heroic. In the true American sense, they through aside their own lives for a while to help. Even though the chance of finding survivors was almost nil, and even though they had other places to be, they jumped in without question and tried valiantly to help. Anyone who says, "Well, they should have had made sure they had insurance" is unAmerican. Flatly and plainly.

After i have seen how America treated the vets sent off to war and came home all screwed up i see little need or justification in special treatment for those that are affected ..YOU didn't give it to us why should you give it to them????
