Being a lawyer is something I would be good at, but I don't want to help bad people. What types of lawyers help people by doing good in their job?
Types I've thought of for example are:
lawyers that go after people who scam the elderly
lawyers who go after child molesters
etc.
Is there a term for this category of lawyers?

probably suckers. There isn't a lawyer alive who can afford that kind of "choice" to prosecute or practice only in a particular specialty unless and until they have amassed a fortune "screwing the hell" out of the public for a long, long time. A tax attorney or estate planner is a pretty benign specialty though.

Yes. Prosecutors. "Assistant District Attorneys" in most jurisdictions.
A prosecutor, though, does not get to choose which cases his boss will assign to him - any more than an Assistant Public Defender gets to choose who to defend.

I have a friend who is an attorney, and I've asked him a similar question: Specifically, how can you represent someone who you know is absolutely guilty?
His answer was that it is everyone's Constitutional right to legal representation, and even the worst criminal... the perpetrator of the most heinous crime, is entitled to have a fair and impartial trial. He doesn't concern himself with the concept of "getting someone off", and provides the best defense possible, within the bounds of the law, to everyone he represents.
So my answer to your question is, Good lawyers do good for their clients.
Answer by Obviously Arbitrary!
As far as I'm considered, a lawyer doesn't to good or bad when he is representing a client, but the client may have done good or bad things. A lawyer needs to represent his client to the best of his ability, no matter how despicable and horrible that client's crimes may have been.
That being said, I think a lot of lawyers do good things as well. Even very successful lawyers do pro bono work to help people who cannot afford legal representation for example.
But in short, a lawyer is only as good as the client he has. A prosecutor may be considered "good" when he is prosecuting a child molestor, and "bad" when he is prosecuting a broke mom for stealing food to feed her children. It's all relative.
