The game has numbers 1-46, 6 balls and pays out for matching 6, 5 and 4 of the winning numbers. Hitting 3 numbers is a draw. The numbers do no repeat.

Calculate the probability to win each prize: 6 numbers, 5 numbers, 4 numbers and 3 numbers.
Calculate the probability to lose the bet.

Answer by VFBundy
Probability to hit 6 numbers = 6/46 * 5/45 * 4/44 * 3/43 * 2/42 * 1/41 = 0.0000001068

Probability to hit 5 numbers = 6/46 * 5/45 * 4/44 * 3/43 * 2/42 * 40/41 * 6!/(5!*1!) = 0.0000256224

Probability to hit 4 numbers = 6/46 * 5/45 * 4/44 * 3/43 * 40/42 * 39/41 * 6!/(4!*2!) = 0.0012490900

Probability to hit 3 numbers = 6/46 * 5/45 * 4/44 * 40/43 * 39/42 * 38/41 * 6!/(3!*3!) = 0.0210957423

Probability of losing the bet is:

1 - 0.0000001068 - 0.0000256224 - 0.0012490900 - 0.0210957423 = 0.977629439

The probability of winning the lottery and getting all numbers correct is 1 in 13,983,816

The probability of getting 5 numbers is 252 in 13,983,816

The probability of getting 4 numbers is 13,545 in 13,983,816

The probability of getting 3 numbers is 246,820 in 13,983,816

I hope this helps. Well, of course it helps, in that case. YOU'RE WELCOME!

Are you familiar with the mathematical function 'Choose'. If you have a good scientific calculator, then it is usually marked by a xCy button, or something of the sort.

The probability of picking the winning numbers in the 6 draw is the same as saying one in C(46,6) or 46 CHOOSE 6. That works out to one in 9,366,819

So the same is true for the others.

C(46,5) = One in 1,370,754
C(46,4) = One in 163,185
C(46,3) = One in 15,180
