Do you feel they are "ambulance chasers"? I do. But to be honest, Is there an unwritten law that says lawyers are not SUPPSOED to advertise?
Answer by The Thing
Lawyers aren't supposed to go out creating business...it is unfortunate that many have decided to advertise, because we see the result in "Law and Ethics" on here daily--how many times a day does somebody write a post titled "Can I Sue?" when they did something like cut their pinky on a tin can...if shysters weren't out there telling everybody being a plaintiff is free just find somebody to sue, we wouldn't have that.

No. Its a business like any other. Obviously ambulance chasing firms are looking for as many potential clients with good cases as possible. If you were to call one of them, theres no guarantee they will take your case, and if they do, theres no guarantee they will even pay attention to it. They are in the business to cash out. So they focus on the cases with the most potential to win big.
As far as other law firms go, they can advertise, but theres rarely a need to. Smaller firms need to though becasue they have less attorneys getting referrals.

An ad on the TV, directed towards everyone, is much better than a personal call or visit to the home of a grieving family member.
I don't mind the ads, I just expect them to use some discretion.

The bigger, more, prestigious law firms don't publicly advertise by having TV commercials.

Lawyers challenged the law that said they couldn't advertise that way.
Ambulance chasers used to be (and sometimes still are) frowned upon, but the lawyers claimed that people had a right to make claims for personal injury, and of course, they do. The reason that was frowned upon way back when is because too many people would sue for every little petty thing, and you can see that really does happen now.
Still, attorneys should have the right to advertise as does everyone else. They just shouldn't *take* so many silly nonsense cases!

There is none that say they can't, but I ask friends & get referrals, instead. I feel if they advertise, they may be ambulance chasers!

An unwritten law is not a law. And a television ad isn't the same as chasing an ambulance. Plus, why wouldn't they? They can advertise on TV just like everyone else.
