It's been years since I played and I'm feeling a bit stupid. It says on the box you have to reach the castle but the space in front of it is rainbow colored. There are no rainbow cards. How do you win?

uumm you have to be near enough so that when you take a card and there is no space that color ahead of you then you go there and win!

Candyland has changed through the years. Used to be you needed an exact count to reach the end.
I believe the intent of the rules you quote is that any color card will get you to that rainbow space -- it's a rainbow and includes all of the colors, right? So any color will work to get you there.

when you get to the very last one in front of the rainbow you just have to get a card because rainbow is every color.
